War on what now?

Now that it's over, I suppose I should make mention of what I thought of the whole "War on Christmas" nonsense.

To be honest, not much. I spent both Erev Christmas, and Yom Noel itself, pretty much zonked. (Thank my mother for the silly names for it.)

So, um, yeah. War on Christmas? I honestly wasn't paying attention. I was preoccupied with trying to sleep off my bout of the flu. I think most everyone else was preoccupied with getting or giving presents, or in the case of my Jewish friends, ordering Chinese food and watching DVDs. There's not a whole lot of actual "war" in the "war" on Christmas. Just more bloviating from the right-wing blowhards.

If you ask me, I'm more concerned about the president openly admitting that he has authorized, and will continue to authorize, warrantless wiretaps on American citizens in the name of the "war on terror". Why isn't there more talk about that, folks? Why did everybody get caught up in this "war on Christmas" business?

Couldn't be that the whole thing was just a convenient distraction, could it?

Or, indeed, people could have their Christmas holidays spoilt in other ways. I for example have had mine nicely decimated by Bridget-Jones style nagging from other peoples' parents about the ticking of the biological clock, the importance of spawning some brats, and the pure egotism of those women who choose not to give up their careers for the purpose of pushing a goddamn pram.

Who gives a toss about 'War on Christmas' when you've got 'crap and partisan abuse of festive occasions'?

Not really that, no, although you're giving me ideas there :-)

I don't know quite what to do, other than be incredibly depressed, which I certainly am. I feel absolutely awful, not to complain for a minute but it strikes me that my identity is not exactly getting much acknowledgement here, and wish to go bugger off somewhere and, I dunno, be miserable or something.

I never got a clear sense of what the hell this was all about, so I ignored it. I heard that there WAS a war on Xmas but I didn't actually, at any point, hear anyone attacking it.

definitely seemed like some trumped up bullshit to me.
