Perhaps South Dakota needs a new state logo?

Oh my. Actually that's darkly amusing.
We've been hearing about this madness all the way in the UK on the news. (Boggled!)

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Do us a favor?

If we get too crazy, would you guys just lob a nuke at DC?

[identity profile] motodraconis.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's worrying, what starts in the US often ends up in the UK too.
For instance, Tony Blair was spouting about his being judged by God the other day. Time was in the UK for a leader to admit to being religious or mention such things, (or let slip religious rhetoric of any kind,) would have been unheard of, secular only please, we're British..
Thank God* there was much hoo-ha and spluttering of shock and outrage in the UK media after his outburst.

* Irony intended.

You got IM at all?

Just curious, since you seem to be on now...

[identity profile] motodraconis.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Arg! Sorry, what with time difference I'd gone to bed when you made that last comment, so I didn't spot it til much later.
I'm afraid I don't do IM or anything similar, or have such software installed on my pc; basically because I'm terrified of getting addicted to it and ending up getting a bollocking at work for using it too much, or not cracking on with my art projects when I'm at home.
I spend far too much time on LJ as it is, I can't risk getting sucked into IM.
:-)

Fair enough.

So, is that the luck dragon of Liverpool in your icon?

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, please no nukes! They would do nasty bad things to my beloved Smithsonian--not to mention me!

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, then, how about an invasion?

Hell, they burned the White House once before...

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Invasion works for me! Just so long as they're civilized invaders who leave the Smithsonian intact.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
They're British. They'd stop the invasion at half past four for teatime.

[identity profile] stuntviolist.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Some British nobles may still be sore about the whole Smithsonian thing.

[identity profile] kimberly-t.livejournal.com 2006-03-16 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would they be sore about "the whole Smithsonian thing"? Enlighten, please.

[identity profile] stuntviolist.livejournal.com 2006-03-17 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
James Smithson was a British scientist who was largely unaccepted by British society. When he died he didn't leave any of his money to the Academy of Sciences. He decided to leave the money to the U.S. to snub the British snobs.

[identity profile] tfcocs.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That is perfect.

[identity profile] dorei.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it was seen on [livejournal.com profile] bronxelf_ag001's journal, but apparently, was from the Daily Kos.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh. Thanks, then. :-)

[identity profile] dorei.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
any time.

[identity profile] winters-edge.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfect. So glad to hear someone from the state speaking up. If I were up for getting my backside kicked (I am not), I would have said much this week to people who have been making comments about where you live. I realize that when a state makes a decision, it's easy to generalize, but it's really unfair for people to assume everyone who lives there supports what happened.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I live in Minnesota. Near to SD, but not in it.

I am close enough that, if an underground railroad starts up to get women to abortion providers in other states, I may end up contributing. At the very least, I would be giving funds.

[identity profile] randallsquared.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
To be clear, this outlaws abortion (mostly) *in* SD, rather than for all resident's of SD anywhere, yes? If so, then it would be an aboveground railroad. :)

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Until and unless the federal government decides to make it a crime to transport women across state lines to get abortions...

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
There is some talk about that, actually. In fact, I think some places have at least passed laws to make it illegal to transport a minor across state lines for purposes of procuring an abortion for her. Dunno if anyone has passed laws relating to women too old to need parental consent, but I wouldn't be surprised.

[identity profile] winters-edge.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm- do you work in ND? I have you associated with a Dakota...Sorry for my confusion.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
I live in Moorhead, Minnesota, which is literally right across the border (and river) from Fargo, ND. The two cities are separate politically, but very much one city socially and economically. I live in Moorhead, but work in Fargo, visit friends in Fargo, usually go out to eat in Fargo, shop for groceries in Moorhead but computer equipment in Fargo, etc.

That may be why you're confused. No need to apologize, it's an odd arrangement. :-)

Ow.

Excellently done, but Ow.

Scarily appropriate.

*smile* *cringe*

Oh, the dark humour...it is not pleasant.

Laughter is a powerful weapon, especially against the sanctimonious.

[identity profile] jackshoegazer.livejournal.com 2006-03-10 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that is amazing in a really twisted sort of way.

like what you have to say

[identity profile] lucretiasheart.livejournal.com 2006-03-10 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I decided to check out your LJ after popping in on that last argument betwixt you and Pope regarding men's rights...

At the risk of sounding obsequious, I'm impressed and would like to "friend" you. May I?

Re: like what you have to say

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-10 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely!

I shall check out yours and probably do the same.

Rockin' cool.

I don't know that any of my more recent posts is much more than giddy. I'm just coming out of a serious depression, and so I'm all "oooh, look at the pretty birds!" and stuff! If you want more interesting stuff, maybe check out "assessments" tag and memories-- . For proof I'm not always quite so la-la-la! =P

Re: like what you have to say

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Aye, well, I know how serious depressions can be. 2004 was muchly depressed for me.

[identity profile] kimberly-t.livejournal.com 2006-03-16 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Too painfully appropriate!

Wonder what it would take to get that to appear in one of MSN's "the week in pictures" series?
