Tuskegee again?

Scientists in Baltimore, using federal grant money, have been using sludge made from human and industrial wastes on yards in poor, black neighborhoods, ostensibly testing whether it might protect children from lead in the soil. Yet not only were the families not informed of the source of the sludge, but no medical follow-up was done.

Tell me again, folks, how Reverend Jeremiah Wright was "crazy" when he suggested that AIDS might have been engineered by the government as a weapon against black people? I don't believe he's correct about that, mind you, but gee...where might he have gotten that idea?

And keep in mind, that's just the stuff we know about. Meanwhile, all the comfortable racists go, "Oh, I'm safe because I'm not that bad. Why, I have a black neighbor. Or co worker. Or something."

Yeah, where could he have come to that conclusion?

He's still sexist.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He did make a couple of remarks in his speech which were sexist, yes. I wonder if he was conscious of it.

More important, I suppose, is the fact that, conscious or not at the time, he hasn't repudiated them.

Like many men, of course, he's not even aware of his male privilege.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a time when I wasn't either.

Yeah, but you're a lot younger than he is. However he's a preacher, which means that he's got a lot bigger ego.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
True enough. And I did have feminist parents, especially my mother. Plus, I'm used to introspection; when you grow up with Asperger's and learn social interaction as a second language, you have to be.

As for ego, well, I wonder if it's the "alpha male" syndrome?

[identity profile] ginmar.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's asshole syndrome, frankly.
