Saying it all

I do not, generally, watch televised news, as A) I don't have a television hookup, and B) I don't trust it. However, I found video of Keith Olbermann's extremely eloquent and damning editorial from September 5th.

You can view the video here, and a transcript is available here.

Can it be that the levees the White House erected to hold back the tide of consequences for their lies and deceit have finally broken?

It doesn't matter. The American people will not have yet learned their lesson, so there will still be a Federal government in 2008.

That is precisely the wrong lesson to learn.

The lesson to be learned from this is that there are certain things for which ONLY government is qualified, unless the government is led by incompetent and uncaring assholes. Under past Presidents, in the event of hurricanes, things were never this bad.

Well, right, but the two biggest factors in the destruction in this case are federally created. If you want to continue to have disasters this large (or even larger!), just
  • Subsidize insurance costs so that people are more likely to live in places they would otherwise avoid, like below sea level, or on mudslide-prone hillsides

  • Make sure to create a whole class of people who have no reason to learn to fend for themselves, by providing for people in proportion with how much they refuse to provide for themselves

For bonus points, attempt to depress the rest of the economy by siphoning money from places that do well to places that are marginal or net-consuming, so that people are completely sheltered from the consequences of their actions until the consequences are large enough to make world headlines.

I'm sorry, this is absolute nonsense. Please stop.

Okay.
